bit-tuner, born and raised in st.gallen (switzerland), lives and works in zurich (switzerland) (http://www.share.dj/share/event_info.php?eventID=705)
since 1997, bit-tuner producing music and beats with computer, mpc, synthesizer, bassguitar and a lot of analog effects. he likes to work with samples from old vinyl records, and in recent times with self-recorded sounds and field recordings. the musical results are heavyweight beats, punching basslines, dark atmospheres and melodies, and noisy soundscapes.
he also composes music and does sounddesign for dancetheatre productions. he works with the dancecompany at theater st.gallen, cie. sans filtre, zürich, compagnie buffpapier, st. gallen.. in the recent past he also composes soundtracks for shortmovies. for example “vandalen” from simon steuri and “bipolar” from gabriela betschart.
with swiss rapper ‘göldin’ he dropped four albums, and a remix-ep as göldin & bit-tuner on quiet records/zurich.
further collaborations: with sensational from wordsound recordings/nyc, bleubird from endemik music/miami, sole from anticon/california, and many others..
bit-tuner’s 4 track instrumental-ep “aspects” was released 2004 by local_form records/st.gallen, and his first solo-album “toxin” was released in 2008 by umbruch recordings/hamburg. in december 2009 his second full-lenght album “low-speed detonation” was released on CD/LP by trepok rec./zurich.

PROPENSITY OF SOUND: Pauline Oliveros’ Primordial/Lift + Carol Robinson’s Billows
The second public performance and NYC premiere of Pauline Oliveros’ 1998 work Primordial/Lift, featuring many performers from the original studio recording: Pauline Oliveros – accordion & electronics, voice; Andrew Deutsch – electronics & toy piano; Anne Bourne – cello & voice; David Grubbs – electric guitar. The work is “based on information concerning the shift in the resonant frequency of the earth”.

Pauline Oliveros – A native Texan, Oliveros has influenced American music extensively in her career spanning more than 60 years as a composer, performer, author and philosopher. She pioneered the concept of Deep Listening, her practice based upon principles of improvisation, electronic music, ritual, teaching and meditation, designed to inspire both trained and untrained musicians to practice the art of listening and responding to environmental conditions in solo and ensemble situations.
During the mid-’60s she served as the first director of the Tape Music Center at Mills College, aka Center for Contemporary Music followed by 14-years as Professor of Music and 3 years as Director of the Center for Music Experiment at the University of California at San Diego. Since 2001 she has served as Distinguished Research Professor of Music in the Arts department at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) where she is engaged in research on a National Science Foundation CreativeIT project. Her research interests include improvisation, special needs interfaces and telepresence teaching and performing. She also serves as Darius Milhaud Composer in Residence at Mills College doing telepresence teaching and she is executive director of Deep Listening Institute, Ltd. where she leads projects in Deep Listening, Adaptive Use Interface. She is the recipient of the 2009 William Schuman Award from Columbia University for lifetime achievement. A retrospective from 1960 to 2010 was performed at Miller Theater, Columbia University in New York March 27, 2010 in conjunction with the Schuman award. She received a third honorary degree from DeMontort University, Leicester, UK July 23, 2010. David Grubbs - Grubbs has released eleven solo albums, the most recent of which is Hybrid Song Box.4 (Blue Chopsticks). He is known for his cross-disciplinary collaborations with writers such as Susan Howe and Rick Moody, and with visual artists such as Anthony McCall, Angela Bulloch, Cosima von Bonin, and Stephen Prina. He is an assistant professor in the Conservatory of Music at Brooklyn College and director of the graduate programs in Performance and Interactive Media Arts (PIMA). Grubbs was a 2005-6 grant recipient from the Foundation for Contemporary Arts and has been called one of two “Best Teachers for an Indie-Rocker to Admire” in the Village Voice and “le plus Français des Américains” in Libération.
Anne Bourne – With improvised streams of extended cello and voice, Anne integrates the experience of listening and composing for dance, film, experimental context, digital image media, chamber music, and words. She has created with Andrea Nann, Michael Ondaatje, Susie Ibarra, Eve Egoyan, Alvin Lucier, Nicolas Collins, John Oswald, Tom Kuo, Peter Mettler, Fred Frith, and Pauline Oliveros. Anne is interested in each musical expression being an offering of sonic activism, in the sense of resolution between tones, peoples, landscapes, and individual paradoxes through listening.
Jason Kao Hwang (violin) leads his quartet, EDGE, quintet, Local Lingo, octet, Burning Bridge, and improvising string orchestra, Spontaneous River. He has performed with William Parker, the Rova Sax Quartet, Henry Threadgill and received grants from Chamber Music America, the NEA, NJSCA, and Meet the Composer.
Miguel Frasconi is a composer and improvisor who uses electronics and a menagerie of glass objects to create his sound world. He has worked closely with many esteemed composers and choreographers. He presently teaches electronic music at Bard College and is director of the new music ensemble Ne(x)tworks.
Suzanne Thorpe is an electro-acoustic flautist, composer and sound artist. Her fixed compositions tend to be site-specific multichannel works that employ psycho-acoustic phenomena and tuned filtering techniques, and in performance she extends her instrument with an ever-evolving set-up of analogue and real-time software components. As an improviser she has performed with Chris Brown, Annette Krebs, Maggie Nicols, Fred Frith, Pauline Oliveros, Gino Robair, Zeena Parkins, and Ulrich Krieger among others. Thorpe is a founding member of the alternative rock group Mercury Rev, with whom she worked from 1989 – 2001, earning numerous critical accolades, and from time to time she can be heard mucking it up with J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr. She has a discography of over 20 recordings released on Sony, V2, Beggars Banquet, Geffen, Specific Recordings, with a most recent release with feedback artist Philip White as the duo thenumber46. Coming up she can be heard with a newly formed quartet, Volume, with Shelley Burgon, Maria Chavez and Stephan Moore, among other configurations.
Deutsch received his BFA in Video Art and Printmaking from Alfred University in 1990. He obtained his MFA in Integrated Electronic Art from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1994. Since 1998 Deutsch has released over 14 CDRs of solo electronic music on his Magic If Recordings.
Carol Robinson’s Billows:
Billows is a twelve-section piece for basset horn or birbyne and a reactive electronic environment. Drawn from a series of recent pieces for solo instruments with live electronics Billows explores the shifting components of timbre and time.
Franco-American composer and clarinetist Carol Robinson has a multifaceted musical life, equally at ease in the classical and experimental realms.
Robinson often works closely with composers, but she also pursues new and alternative contexts for her work through collaborations with video artists, photographers, and musicians from diverse backgrounds. The freely converging musical world of her group Sleeping in Vilna is typical of what interests her. Improvisation is her passion. She began composing by writing for her own music theater productions, subsequently receiving commissions for concert pieces, installations, radio, dance and film productions. Her works often combine acoustic sounds with electronics, and her musical aesthetic is strongly influenced by a fascination with aleatoric systems. Particularly interested in dance, she has collaborated with choreographers Susan Buirge, Nadège MacLeay, Thierry Niang, François Verret, and Young Ho Nam.
In 2008, she was awarded a composition fellowship from the Civitella Ranieri Foundation. Her works have been recorded by the Hessischer Rundfunk, Saarlandischer Rundfunk, Lithuanian National Radio, and Radio France. Billows, for clarinets and live electronics, was released by Plush in 2009. Other recent releases include solo monograph recordings of music by Giacinto Scelsi, Morton Feldman, Luigi Nono, and Luciano Berio for Mode Records, Phil Niblock for Touch, as well as classical music and jazz for Syrius, BTL and Nato.
Carol Robinson was born in the United States and graduated from the Oberlin Conservatory. After receiving a H.H. Wooley grant to study in Paris, she settled in France.

Tonight’s featured guests are Erin Sexton & Magali Babin
Erin Sexton & Magali Babin are both based in Montreal, and being long-time friends of Share community. However, this is their duet debut in NYC at Share.nyc.
Erin Sexton grew up in British Columbia, studying media art at the Emily Carr University of Art + Design in Vancouver, exploring the performative aspects of video, sound, and electronics. Experimental and improvised, her work became increasingly about sound and its experience, prompting a move to Montreal in 2004. She began performing in concert and gallery spaces, releasing her first album “aircraft” that same year. Currently she lives in Montreal and spends her time recording gunshots, building instruments, making installations, performing solo, and improvising with other local and international sound artists/experimental musicians.

Magali Babin has been active on the expérimental and improvised music scenes since the 1980s. Her artistic work is based on playful amplification, sonic interaction and manipulation of everyday objects. One result of ongoing research is her first solo CD, Chemin de fer (No Type) — a work comissionned by Mario Gauthier for Radio-Canada.
Starting with the amplification of the objects, Magali Babin developed an interest for the recording of environmental sounds and “sounds we no longer hear, since they are such an integral part of our routine.” The artist explores and archives this singular and very personal instrumentation with use of electronic implements and contact microphones. The relationship with sound and “the gesture of object interactions” are important aspects of her compositions.
In parallel with her compositional work, her research activities are presently focused on capturing natural and environmental phenomena, fabricating different types of microphones and exploring acoustic phenomena of performance spaces.
For the last ten years the artist has performed with unique and unexpected sonorities, both solo and in the company of musicians, dancers and performers. Magali Babin is spoken-of as one of the central personalities on the high risk improvisation scene in Montréal.

Jeff Carey (b. 1972) is an electronic music composer and performer focussing on real-time multichannel electro-instrumental music. Since the early 90′s Carey has been working with electronic music in experimental, improvised and composed contexts, has performed and presented his music in clubs, art galleries, festivals, and squats in Europe, Scandinavia and the US, and has been involved in several critically acclaimed performance groups such as 87 Central (NoTV/Universal, Staalplaat, JDK Productions, ERS Records), Jeff Carey’s MoHa! Myo is the solo project of Cory O’Brien, a self taught hacker, computer musician and electro-acoustic improviser. Contact mics on polycarbonate sheets and feedback networks programmed in Max/MSP are the preferred tools. His music has been described by Vital Weekly as “louder, dirtier, gritty and angular, but still with ingredients of microsound”. Other projects and collaborations include Never Work (with Kenneth Yates of Harm Stryker, Insects with Tits), Makioki Sisters (with Jeff Surak / Violet) and Clouds-Out (with video artist Jesse Hartgraves). He currently lives and works in Washington, DC.

Emil de Waal: drums, percussion, electronics and laptop is one of the most heavily engaged drummers in Danish music, and has toured internationally and appeared on 150 releases since his debut in 1986. Emil de Waal is also known as a band-leader, programmer, composer and arranger. Since 2004, Emil de Waal+ has released three albums with his “Emil de Waal+” project that have been appraised by reviewers a.o. in British “The Wire”. Emil de Waal+ has toured in China, US, Belgium, Germany, Sweden, Norway and Denmark with diverse guests such as Wayne Horvitz, Danny Frankel, Erik Sanko, Bruce Tovsky, Andy Green, Kato Hideki, Hasse Poulsen and Yan Jun.

Bruce Tovsky:
Multifaceted media artist Bruce Tovsky’s 30 year career cuts a broad swath across disciplines, from his skills as a recording engineer and producer of bands like Liquid Liquid, the seminal 80’s downtown NYC cult band, to his successful career editing and designing award-winning TV commercials, documentaries and music videos, to his evocative video/sound works that are extensions of his visual arts practice. His multimedia works have drawn acclaim in festivals, museums and galleries in the USA, Europe, Japan and around the world. Tovsky collaborated extensively with choreographers during the 80’s and 90’s, scoring and creating sound and video design for works by artists such as Muna Tseng, Cydney Wilkes and Charles Dennis at venues like The Kitchen, PS122, The Joyce Theater, Lincoln Center and elsewhere. Since the early 2000’s he has been associated with Issue Project Room, both as performer and curator, and he has recorded and produced many of the shows he was involved in, most recently recording and producing the amazing collaboration between Genesis P-Orridge and Tony Conrad that was recently released on vinyl by Dias Records and received a glowing review in the UK music magazine The Wire. His 30 year associtaion with Liquid Liquid continues to this day, with his 2009 production of Domino’s UK release of the definitive reissue of their entire output, including rare bonus tracks from his archive.

Richard Garet: Richard Garet’s video works investigates the possibilities found in today’s technology to create moving image. These works examine process, color, motion, digital glitches, RGB phenomena, afterimage, and the sensory gaps between the eye and the mind. The techniques employed to interact with the work intend to push the boundaries of digital moving image and emphasize the media, digital permutations, and software processing as a pure and fundamental artistic gesture. Additional methods utilized are image scanning, analog and digital processes to treat light and image, film degradation, film decay, and rigorous and repetitive systems of digital corruption.
Garet has collaborated with artists such as: Andy Graydon, Gill Arno, Ben Owen, Gil Sansón, and André Goncalves through the EA collective; and with: Asher, Brendan Murray, Bruce McClure, Bruce Tovsky, Shimpei Takeda, Sawako Kato, Chika Iijima, Wolfgang Von Stürmer, Zimoun, Zach Layton, and Bonnie Jones. His sound compositions have been published on the following labels: And-Oar, Non Visual Objects, Winds Measure Recordings, Unframed Recordings, Con-V, Leerraum, and White_Line Editions. Additionally Garet currently directs the independent media label Contour Editions publishing works that explore the various possibilities of sound and light. Garet also co-curates with Louky Keijsers Koning, the monthly performance event LMAKseries, which integrates film, video, sound art, and media performance into the gallery’s mission at LMAK Projects in the L.E.S, NYC.

A BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION FOR SUZANNE FIOL: Jonathan Kane’s February + Audrey Chen
Join us as we celebrate the birthday of our beloved founder, Suzanne Fiol, with some of her favorite musicians.

Before creating February in 2005, drummer Jonathan Kane was a co-founder of the No Wave legends, Swans and instigated their half time, slow rhythmic crawl. He played in LaMonte Young’s Forever Bad Blues Band, and is the only drummer in Rhys Chatham’s 100 electric guitar orchestra. He plays with a galaxy of downtown luminaries including Kropotkins, Transmission, and Elliott Sharp. As teenagers in the 70s, Jonathan and his brother Anthony took their freshly inked fake IDs to Chicago where they ended up opening for the likes of Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon and James Cotton.
Come dance, trance, and (most importantly) make some NOISE for the band that WFMU describes as “Avant Roadhouse, the music that makes me proud to be human”.

AUDREY CHEN is a Chinese-American musician who was born into a family of material scientists, doctors and engineers, outside of Chicago in 1976. Parting ways with the family convention, she turned to the cello at age 8 and voice at 11. After years of classical and conservatory training in both instruments, with a resulting specialization in early and new music, she parted ways again in 2003 to begin new negotiations with sound in order to discover a more individually honest aesthetic.
Now, using the cello, voice and analog electronics, Chen’s work delves deeply into her own version of narrative and non-linear storytelling. A large component of her music is improvised and her approach to this is extremely personal and visceral. Her playing explores the combination and layering of a homemade analog synth, preparations and traditional and extended techniques in both the voice and cello. She works to join these elements into a singular ecstatic personal language.
Recently, her primary focus has been her SOLO project but she is also involved in many various collaborations. Among musicians, she has worked with Phil Minton, Tetuzi Akiyama, Toshimaru Nakamura, Ko Ishikawa, Elliott Sharp, Aki Onda, Phill Niblock, Frederic Blondy, Jerome Noetinger, C. Spencer Yeh, Alessandro Bosetti, Mats Gustafsson, Mazen Kerbaj, Michael Zerang, Tatsuya Nakatani, Le Quan Ninh, Joe Mcphee, Susan Alcorn, Michele Doneda, Paolo Angeli, Gianni Gebbia, plus many more. Some current projects include: duos with Phil Minton, Frederic Blondy, Robert van Heumen, Katt Hernandez, Nate Wooley, and Id M Theft Able. Trio with Nate Wooley and C. Spencer Yeh. Plus three new quartet projects with Jeff Carey/Morten J. Olsen/Raed Yassin, Miya Masaoka/Hans Grusel/Kenta Nagai and also with Frederic Blondy/Michael Johnsen/Jerome Noetinger.
Chen has performed in Europe, Russia, Australia, New Zealand, China, Japan, Taiwan, Canada and the USA. She is currently based in Baltimore, MD USA but primarily maintains an active touring schedule throughout Europe.

Tonight’s featured guests:
1) TreeSpeedMusic
Cologne-based musician and visual artist aka Andreas Hirsch, brings a peculiar instrument he has been developing: the Palmonica, an electrified palm tree leaf that produces sounds akin to the thumb piano’s.
Via live sampling procedures and effect pedals he is building up pieces that have both references to minimal music and electronics.
Influences reach from Fluxus Music, Moon Dog through to Southeast Asian Music.
In 1998, Hirsch performed Robin Page’s “Plant Piece” at The Roxy in New York, for the opening gala show of “Playing with Matches”, by Al & Beck Hansen; the piece found him intimidating a plastic plant for 45 minutes. Since then, Hirsch has been involved with TreeSpeedMusic.
During March 2010 TreeSpeedMusic has been creating his performance project “TreeSpeedIsland” at the Watermill Center on Long Island. His gig at the Project Issue Room will involve elements of this project.
Hirsch has been exhibiting and performing throughout Europe, involving concerts at “La Nuit Blanche” in Paris, Kunsthalle Fridericianum in Kassel, Germany and Danese, NYC.

2) 10 (Itta + Marqido)
Itta and Marqido are two previously solo experimental musicians who paired up in 2005 to create 10. Independently successful, together, they burst through art festivals throughout much of Asia and parts of Europe, gaining recognition as one of the most active and creative bands on the Asian indie scene.
They met in Seoul at an international experimental music gathering at Bulgasari and were impressed by each others performances. Itta suggested that they tour together and soon after they formed 10, a name that marks the date they met, October 10th, and also symbolizes their union; 1 represents Itta, or “to be”, and 0 represents the first part of Marqido’s name, Maru, or “cycle.”
The two make an artistically complete pair. Their dynamic compositions and improvisations conjugate an assortment of instruments and various art forms. Marqido is a Japanese noise artist with psychedelic and avant-garde influence. For him, the intrigue of using the laptop as an instrument is that the noise seems to mysteriously come about without the listener or viewer being able to definitively identify how. Itta is a Korean vocalist who plays the melodica, piano, accordion, mini synthesizer, key-tar, drum kit, and numerous toys. For her, noise is a poetic device. Itta is an extravagant performer while Marqido is antagonistically still. Together they render a sound and performance that is innocent and explosive, unexpected but not awkward. 10′s performance has provoked words from critics from: “bizarre,” “abrasive,” and “ironic,” to: “intriguing,” “alluring,” and “intricate.”

Daniel Perlin + Christina Wheeler with Vernon Reid, Danny Blume & Benton C Bainbridge

Christina Wheeler
Vocalist, electronic musician, composer and songwriter Christina Wheeler’s musical explorations have included forays in techno, house, 2-step, drum and bass, breakbeat, soul, dance hall, dub, world music, ambient, free jazz and improvisational forms. A native of Los Angeles, California, Ms. Wheeler graduated from Harvard and Radcliffe Colleges and Manhattan School of Music. She has performed and recorded internationally in collaboration with a variety of artists including Ryuichi Sakamoto, Vernon Reid, John Cale, Chaka Khan, PM Dawn, Ravi Coltrane Talvin Singh, Mocky, Jamie Lidell, Swayzak, Jan Jelinek, Modeselektor, Priest (Anti-Pop Consortium, Airborn Audio), DJ Olive, Marc Ribot, Chris Whitley, Zeena Parkins, John Carter, Fred Hopkins, Andrea Parkins, Yappac, Dolibox and Ripperton. Her work with David Byrne included international tours and television appearances on The Late Show with David Letterman, and PBS’s Sessions at West 54th Street series, and her own music was featured on MTV’s electronic music program AMP. At Lincoln Center, Ms. Wheeler premiered Randall Woolf’s The Trick is to Keep Breathing, a composition for voice, string quartet, tape and turntables with custom acetates, and the New York Underground Film Festival commissioned a new score from her and DJ Olive for the 1927 Japanese silent classic, A Page of Madness. She was featured on the New York episode of Tvframes, produced by Citytv, Toronto, Canada, and currently resides in Berlin, Germany.

Re: Destruction
Performance by Daniel Perlin
Re:destruction is a sound and video performance created by smashing a computer with a sledge hammer. It is the fourth piece in a series entitled Work by the artist and sound designer Daniel Perlin.
In re:destruction, a computer is smashed, using a sledge hammer, producing a sound as well as video work. The hammer and the computer are microphoned, sampled, amplified and played as instruments in real time.
Like the preceding pieces in the series, re:destruction is created by a single real-time sample of the sound of the act of labor, mixed with the real-time use of the tool upon objects. In re:destruction, there is the addition of projected color video.
The Work series attempts to examine the implications of sound, noise and music in the processes of the building of physical structures. The fourth performance piece in the series, re: destruction will be performed at Issue Project Room, Broolyn, and dovetails with re: drill performed at the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council gallery, re:construction 1 performed at Studio X and re:construction 2 P.S.1, New York.
