Help Build A New Home for Experimental Arts

Since 2003, ISSUE has been a vital nexus for experimental arts in New York, presenting new work by more than 400 artists each year. In 2008, ISSUE received a tremendous opportunity: a 20-year rent-free lease on the jewel-box theater at 110 Livingston in Downtown Brooklyn.

To date we have raised $2.3 million towards the $3.7 million necessary for renovations to bring the space to code and adapt it for new media and contemporary performance.

We are now focused on raising $425,000 by December 2011 to support architectural and engineering design fees. If we are successful in raising these funds by December, we can move forward swiftly with designs, begin construction in 2012, and open in fall 2013.

To help us reach this important goal, please make a donation online, or send your check payable to ISSUE Project Room, 232 3rd Street, 3rd Floor, Brooklyn, NY, 11215. For questions, please contact Executive Director Ed Patuto at ed@issueprojectroom.org or 718.330.0313 x8.

Existing Space at 110 Livingston

Once renovated, ISSUE Project Room’s theater will be a resource for the thousands of emerging and established artists in our community. ISSUE will be a central force in the revitalization of the Downtown Brooklyn cultural corridor from Fort Greene to DUMBO and an international cultural destination, bringing tens of thousands of arts patrons to the area each year.

ISSUE’s new home will provide expanded opportunities for educational enrichment for local schools and creative professionals and will culturally engage a broad public audience. This space will be one of the few authentic European-style chamber halls in the United States, and will be the only theater in New York with the ability to display 360° visuals. It will accommodate electronic music, black box theater, white box for new media, community and social events, and will be a rare recording space for period film and chamber music.

Funding from the New York State Council on the Arts, mediaThe foundation, Edwards Foundation Arts Fund, and Arnow Family Foundation has enabled ISSUE to complete a visioning process. With WORK Architecture and ARUP acousticians and engineers ISSUE developed a concept for the most innovative performance space in New York City.
