what is share?
SHARE is first and foremost a platform to explore expression, in a variety of artforms. Through its weekly open jam sessions, SHARE.nyc engages its participants and spectators in a continually changing dialog on art and culture. As such, SHARE represents an ongoing exploration of collaborative performance as cultural exchange. It mines the relationship of artistic practice to cultural identity, remapping a multiplicity of cultural discourses. The act of creating artistic content in a multicultural collaborative context is a fascinating and natural extension of the SHARE concept.
Share is an open jam, not just for digirati, but for all new culture lovers. Participants bring their portable equipment, plug into our system, improvise on each others’ signal and perform live audio and video. We furnish the amplification and projection. Share happens every Sunday.
open jams and walk-in sets — Bring your equipment/instruments/gear etc. to join the jam!
audio jam: Prepared and spontaneous music from eight plus simultaneous performers. This is the time and place to perform a piece of music you’ve written and hear it on a large sound system, improvise spontaneously with other participants, get feedback on your latest project or try out that new max patch/software setup. Bring your noise maker of choice and an XLR, quarter-inch or RCA cable to join.
video jam: multi-user live video synthesis. Generating an immersive visual environment, in the SHARE tradition, in which multiple participants are able to jointly compose the video output. Try out and learn about new VJ wetware. As with the audio, walk-in sets are encouraged. Bring your clips or camera or laptop/amiga and VGA, S-Video, or RCA cables to join

Tonight’s feature guests:
Foxdye and Rokhausen travel from the pacific northwest parts of the country to continue their ongoing research and studies in the fields of donkology and polkatronics. Their in-depth experiements now take them to the east coast in order to study the effects of applying donk, vengaboys, polka, happy hardcore and a sourdough muffin to the booties and faces of many an east coaster. Fun (and scientific) times!

Jandek with Ryan Sawyer, Susan Alcorn, Shahzad Ismaily + Ryan Sawyer, C. Spencer Yeh, Nate Wooley Trio

Officially, Jandek is not a person. Albums and live performances are credited to “Jandek”, but the man on the album covers and on stage is “a representative from Corwood Industries”. Corwood is the record label; “Jandek” is the musical project. Both are directed by the same individual. The trinity of Jandek, Corwood, and “the representative” is both three and one.
Jandek sings death blues, ballads and improvised songs with a voice that’s as haunted as Robert Johnson. This is music from the ultimate void – vaguely related to genres like folk, blues and avant-garde but in the end it can only be the sound of Jandek. And there’s never been anything else quite like it.
There had never been any tours, interviews, or public appearances: just the “art itself”, laid out hermetically sealed from the world in the form of the Corwood Industries discography – perhaps one of the most personally revelatory and deeply human bodies of work of any artist of the modern era – …until 2004, when “a representative of Corwood Industries” appeared unannounced at Glasgow’s Instal Festival. Since then he has performed shows across the world in various mind-blowing configurations – Chris Corsano, Richard Youngs, Loren Conors and Alan Licht have all played with him.
For his ISSUE Project Room show Jandek will be performing with Ryan Sawyer, Susan Alcorn and Shahzad Ismaily.
Ryan Sawyer (drummer/composer) plays with Stars Like Fleas, Tall Firs, Lone Wolf and Cub, amongst many others. An improviser that has played with everyone from Thurston Moore to Scarlett Johansson. Recorded on such seminal albums as At the Drive-In’s debut Acrobatic Tenement and Tv on the Radio’s Return To Cookie Mountain. Most recently, he co-wrote and performed the New York chapter of the Boredoms 88 Boa-drum. He lives in Brooklyn.
Susan Alcorn is a Baltimore, Maryland-based composer and musician who has received international recognition as an innovator of the pedal steel guitar, an instrument whose sound is commonly associated with country and western music. Alcorn has absorbed the technique of C&W pedal steel playing and refined it to a virtuosic level. Her original music reveals the influence of free jazz, avant-garde classical music, Indian ragas, Indigenous traditions, and other musics of the world. The UK Guardian describes her music as “beautiful, glassy and liquid, however far she strays from pulse and conventional harmony.”
In addition to frequent tours throughout North America and Europe, Susan has performed at the London Festival of Experimental Music; the Musique Action Festival in Nancy, France; Leipzig JazzTage; The Stone and CBGB’s in New York; Ateliers Tampon in Paris; and at Il Continiere in Rome.
Though mostly a solo performer, she has collaborated with numerous artists including Pauline Oliveros, Eugene Chadbourne, Jandek, Peter Kowald, Ellen Fullman, Caroline Kraabel, Lê Quan Ninh, Sean Meehan, Joe McPhee, LaDonna Smith, Mike Cooper, Johanna Varner, Maggie Nicols, and Fred Frith.

Shahzad Ismaily was born to Pakistani immigrant parents and grew up in a wholly bicultural household. While he holds a masters degree in biochemistry from Arizona State University, he is a largely self-taught composer and musician, having studied the electric bass, guitar, banjo, accordion, flute, drums, various percussion instruments and various analog synthesizers and drum machines. Ismaily has recorded or performed with an incredibly diverse assemblage of musicians, including Laurie Anderson and Lou Reed, Tom Waits, Jolie Holland, Laura Veirs, Bonnie Prince Billy, Faun Fables, Secret Chiefs 3, John Zorn, Elysian Fields, Shelley Hirsch, Niobe, Will Oldham, Nels Cline, Mike Doughty (of Soul Coughing), Graham Haynes, David Krakauer, Billy Martin (of Medeski Martin and Wood), Carla Kihlstedt’s Two Foot Yard, the Tin Hat Trio, Raz Mesinai and Burnt Sugar. He has also composed regularly for dance and theater, including for Min Tanaka, the Frankfurt Ballet and the East River Commedia. Recently he composed the score for the critically acclaimed movie Frozen River, which won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival. He was also an Artist in Residence at the Headlands Center for the Arts in San Francisco, CA in 2008. Currently based in New York , Ismaily has studied music extensively in Pakistan, India, Turkey, Mexico, Santiago, Japan, Indonesia, Morocco and Iceland.
